Carib Beer

845_beer~ Liquid gold on a hot, sunny day ~

St. Maarten is idyllic for many things, not least of which is beer. Whether you and your chaise lounge haven't parted company since breakfast, or you're coming home from a long day at work, reaching out for a cold beer is almost a reflex action. If it's thirst quenching you need, then a cold Carib beer is a perfect option; a very Caribbean drink as its name and home base suggests, it is a pale golden lager brewed in Trinidad, St. Kitts and Grenada.

Whilst food and wine has always gone hand in hand, times they are a-changing. Now brewers regularly recommend beer and food pairings that, together with the growing popularity of craft beers, is helping to take the lowly beer's reputation to loftier heights.

Suggestions for a Carib pairing include sushi and grilled salmon. The beer's light, mild taste will not conflict with the food, yet cuts through the creamy buttery flavor of the fish.

If drinking beer straight up doesn't quite hit the spot, there are some great cocktails out there to liven up your evening and your palate. Of course, you are running the risk of upsetting your beer-drinking friends; this is where talk to the hand is a great signal -

especially when you could be enjoying a coupe de ville made with 6oz Tequila, 6oz freshly-squeezed limes, 3oz Grand Marnier and 6oz chilled Carib Beer. Alternatively for something with more kick and perhaps more to the liking of aforementioned friends, try the Luchador, made with 12oz Carib, 2oz Clamato Juice, 1oz lime juice, 3 dashes of hot sauce, a pinch each of salt and pepper and ice.

Some reading material while you are enjoying your drink of choice; beer was first brewed commercially in Trinidad just after World War I, although it would not be until September 1950 that Caribbean Development Company would launch its own beer; Carib Lager Beer. The rest, as they say, is history.
