Dine @ Bajatzu

842_dineA tasty evening in Maho

It had been quite some time since we'd dined out at Bajatzu in Maho and thought it time to revisit this consistently well-rated restaurant where one is always able to have a reliably good meal in a cosy and modern setting.

We arrived just after 7:00pm which we did not realize was just a few minutes too late in one respect, until we were seated and given our menus. At that point, we were pleasantly surprised to discover, though unable to partake of, the existence of an early bird special, available from 6:00 to 7:00pm. For $26 per person excluding tip, you have the option of choosing the prix-fixe menu featuring three appetizers and seven main courses covering the gamut of pasta, beef, pork and chicken. A real bargain if I may be allowed to say and still so if I am not!

Unrelated to the early bird special was the special of the day which was mussels on this particular night; four different ways for $16.95.

The restaurant was not especially busy with just three tables occupied, but it was early and it was Tuesday night and it was April. We decided to choose from the main menu and started with the Tuna tartare and the house salad at $9 and $13 respectively.

Our server took our drinks and food order speedily and we were very shortly treated to a basket of delicious hot bread rolls; two covered with melted cheese, one with poppy seeds and one with sesame seeds – absolutely delicious and all thoughts of avoiding carbs flew immediately out of the window or at least out of our consciousness.

The Tuna tartare was perfectly spiced; exactly the right portion size – and dare we overuse the word delicious. The garden salad was a garden salad, no fault of the restaurant.

Having wantonly attacked the delicious bread, we were happy to wait for our main courses that, as Murphy would have it, came on time. My companion, otherwise known as vegetarian daughter, had the Thai Tofu and coconut Quinoa which she pronounced to be a most delicious rendition of Tofu; and I had the 6oz Beef Filet with peppercorn sauce and vegetables (the sauce and the vegetables or potatoes are charged extra). Although the beef was perfectly cooked and delicious, its spartan appearance on the plate is merely a result of the plating and the unfortunately typical steakhouse custom of accompaniments being extra to the meal.

At this point, one would usually resist the urge to order dessert, but the mere production of the dessert menu, coupled with extremely limited willpower, resulted in our ordering crème brûlée and flourless chocolate cake with raspberries and ice-cream (because, of course, the absence of flour in the cake will have reduced the calories by a zillion). Both desserts were consumed with pleasure and can be recommended; they looked good and certainly tasted the part.

One final point to note: A 15% gratuity is automatically added to the bill. Since there is currently no uniform rule in the industry and service charge seems to be randomly applied as tax or service, going to the staff or not going to the staff, at least automatically adding the gratuity leaves us clients under no misconception.
