Dine@ Anse Marcel Beach

841_dine~ Surprises at every turn ~

Sunday dawned and we sluggishly got up for breakfast. Actually, the dinner party the night before had made us feel totally replete; we did not really want breakfast any more than we wanted to finish cleaning up in the kitchen only to start prepping for lunch. We mulled about what to do with the lovely day and decided lunch on the Grand Case side of the island would be a good idea because it was still blowing a gale out there.

Where to go was still very much the discussion as we turned into the road at Hope Estate, but then a phone call changed our plans. We stopped, turned around and made for Anse Marcel. Our friend had suggested we go to a beach bar called Anse Marcel Beach for lunch as it was very good. The last time we were there, we remembered just two hotels with hotel restaurants therein and we could not envision the delightful establishment we eventually found.

Following the signs, twisting and turning through the buildings that fill this valley, we really thought we had been misinformed, but then we found ourselves at a great large parking area and a lovely entrance to a very new set up. Boutique, kitchen, bars and eating places were filled with surprising and innovative concepts at every turn, including a fresh water shower in an upright hull of an old boat.

We found chairs and umbrellas on the sand; it was hot and the sea unfortunately had a bit of a back wash but that did not stop us taking a refreshing dip. As we settled down, a beach attendant came by with menus which we perused, very pleased to see the reasonably priced items that sounded fresh and intriguing. We asked where we could eat and were told that we could eat on the beach or go to the restaurant but that the lovely rondavel eating spots we spied were reserved well in advance so we had no chance to get one of those. These rondavels were roofed – round as rondavels are – with blinds that come down in sections all around the banquette with the table set in the middle. What is nice about them is that either the entire blinds could be rolled up or sections left down according to the wind directing.

We chose to eat on the beach, but after the dinner the previous evening decided to go light. It was difficult to choose; it really was as everything on the menu sounded good. Friends joined us as we were making our meal choice so we tasted quite a variety of dishes in the end.

After making our choice of an unknown (to us) bottle of rose, we ordered the smoked salmon starter that was home cured, and a grilled calamari. They were totally delicious. The others had candied tuna that melted in the mouth, smoked duck salad and foie gras (which is a must for me next time we go) beef Carpaccio, and a hamburger; the sides that came were hot crispy French fries and delicious mesclun greens.

The rose was called Tentation that bore a label "Medaille D'or 2012" on the interestingly shaped bottle; it was totally perfect for the meal on a Sunday fun-day.

Feeling a little peckish a while later, we decided to try some desserts and chose three among all of us. These desserts proved one simply cannot go wrong with sweet endings at a beachside restaurant of this calibre. Naturally, the Hot Chocolate Lava cake was ordered and what a delight it was with the outer crust crispy and spongy at the same time and the hot molten centre spilling out perfectly as the spoon was dug into the sweet morsel. We also ordered a lemon meringue pie "their" way – this was served not as the usual slice on a plate but in a glass. Layered with a crust at the bottom of the glass then the lemon filling topped with meringue and a wee crisp meringue and blackberry perched on top, this dessert was refreshing and delightful. The third choice of dessert was a vanilla Panna cotta with a red berry sauce that truly was my favourite. All desserts were good sized portions.

Each weekend, a theme evening is prepared. Anse Marcel Beach is a luxurious, chic, off the beaten track (but easily approached by boat), lovely spot to enjoy sun, fun, wine and a great meal. We will definitely be returning.
