clinking-wine-glasses-properClinking Etiquette: Are you kidding me!?

Most people have been clinking wine glasses wrongly. Some, in fact, recommend you not clink glasses at all, but instead simply raise them... How boring is that?!?

Lucky for you, Out 'N About is here to let you know the best technique for clinking wine glasses and why there is a wrong way. Don't start laughing; it's really not so ridiculous.

Just imagine yourself holding a fine crystal glass filled with very lovely wine. Upon clinking, the rim of the glass shatters and the wine spills out with broken crystal glass everywhere.

Avoid such a disaster by clinking your wine glasses properly; you'll not only avoid breakage but delight in the awesome ringing clinking sound emitted!

The technique is called the "Bell to Bell" method. The idea is that you aim your wine glass bell (the big round part in the middle) to the bell of your clinking-buddy's wine glass. Upon contact the glass lets out a long sustained "DING!" which causes everyone to look around to see who knows how to party.

Also be sure that you look your clinking partner in the eyes. Folklore has it that if you don't, you will have seven years of bad sex!

Considering the Art of Toasting

Toasts date back to the ancient world. They are a part of our global heritage, but the modern era seems to have let this tradition fall to the wayside.

There was a time, not that long ago, when one could not go to a function such as a wedding or birthday soiree and not hear at least one carefully prepared and thoughtful toast to honour the occasion. Toasts were the mark of one's ability to inspire and to keep the proceedings moving along at a happy pace.

A good toast should be light, friendly and poetic. Some occasions may be well suited to the trite and gauche, but please do try to abstain from these:

Here's mud in your eye –

Here's looking up your old address –

Over the lips and through the gums –

Look out, stomach, here it comes!

If you haven't the time or inclination to compose a proper toast, here are some tasteful classics that you might like to memorize.

"May you live as long as you like, and have all you like as long as you live."

"There are good ships, and there are wood ships – the ships that sail the sea.

But the best ships are friendships – and may they always be."

"May we kiss whom we please, and please whom we kiss."

"May neighbours respect you,

Trouble neglect you,

The angels protect you,

And heaven accept you."

"My friends are the best friends: Loyal, willing and able.

Now let's get to drinking! All glasses off the table!"

"May you have the hindsight to know where you've been –

The foresight to know where you are going –

And the insight to know when you have gone too far."

"May the saddest day of your future be no worse than the happiest day of your past."
