~ A diamond in the rough ~

Barnacles has been a favourite weekly hangout of mine since I discovered it two years ago. The bar and restaurant are tucked in a corner of Portofino Marina behind Le Gourmet Marche, next to Lal's Curry in a Hurry. At first glance, Barnacles might seem like any other boatie bar, but one look through its exterior and you realize it is truly a diamond in the rough.

The owner and staff are probably some of the nicest people I have met, and always greet you with a smile and are ready for a chat. The music (at times a DJ, sometimes live performances and otherwise a fun playlist) adds to the light and fun atmosphere.

Mondays – Live music with "White Chocolate" featuring Dave & Trudie from 5:30pm; Tuesdays – DJeTaime starts spinning from 6:30pm; Wednesdays – Live music with Jessy The Magician from 5:30pm; Thursdays – Get in the mood with Mason starting at 7:00pm; Friday – Enjoy live Latin music with Eupimio; Saturday – Quiz night, where you can win a $50 bar tab starting at 8:00pm!

The bar is fully stocked, and the bartenders are not stingy with the alcohol, making their drink prices a great deal. But besides the warm staff, daily entertainment and great drinks, the most surprising thing about this seemingly ordinary bar is the food. Instead of just the usual bar-fare such as ribs, burgers and fried goods, the menu offers a great selection of authentic Greek food for a fair price.

The Okatpodi Psito (marinated grilled octopus), Melitzanes Psited (grilled eggplant) and Souvlaki sticks (meat skewers) are just a few of the tasty appetizers. The menu offers an array of salads – the Barbouni (Red Mullet salad) is a favourite among friends.

Choosing a main course is difficult, as I have loved every dish I've tried so far, but no one should visit Barnacles without tasting the Greek Burger. If you are vegetarian, there are enough options, including the Green Platter, an assortment of grilled eggplants, feta cheese, olives, marouli salad and pita spread served with tzatziki sauce and skordalia... YUM!

If you still are not full, you can finish your meal with Baklava (sweet filo pastry layered with chopped almonds baked with a honey and lemon syrup), Greek yogurt with honey or Milopita (warm apple pie).

For those who do enjoy their usual bar-food, there is a selection of dishes including hot wings, double angus cheeseburger, beer battered onion rings and more. Basically, it is guaranteed that you will leave Barnacles with a satisfied stomach. I'd definitely recommend having a bite at Barnacles.

Three tips: (1). Do not order the Smelts unless you are in the mood for a lot of small fried fish. (2). Do flirt with the cute bartenders. (3). Take a look in the bathrooms; the witty writings will make you smile.
