That Yoda Guy Movie Exhibit!

P1120938This exhibit is possibly the most surprising enterprise in the Caribbean. Who would expect to find Darth Vader, Pinhead from HELLRAISER and Ridley Scott's Alien in St. Maarten? The exhibit spans six decades of movie making, with items from The Terminator, Men in Black and even The Maltese Falcon from 1941.

The foundation is the brainchild of Hollywood creature effects wizard, Nick Maley, and his wife Gloria. Nick is known as "that Yoda Guy" for his contribution to the creation of Yoda for the Star Wars sagas. If you don't know who Nick is, just Google his name. He's made more than 50 movies, including Superman, Highlander, Krull & Lifeforce and has worked with Hollywood legends like Sean Connery, Sir Anthony Hopkins and Harrison Ford (you will see them all in the exhibit). He was featured in Cinemax and HBO specials, won a place in The Guinness Book of World Records and was nominated for an EMMY.

Nick and his wife first came to St. Maarten in 1985. They have been living here for five years, originally hopping between here and Antigua. When we asked Nick why he chose to live on St. Maarten, he answered, "When we first conceived the idea of creating a museum, we needed a location that had year-round tourists. That limited us to Puerto Rico, St Thomas and St. Maarten in the Caribbean.

"Puerto Rico is too much of a big city. If I wanted that, I would have stayed in England. Being European, I favoured St. Maarten/St. Martin for its diverse community and great restaurants. But more than that, I recognized that St. Maarten was putting money into the tourist product – the Boardwalk and beautifying Philipsburg – when other islands were just taking money out while their facilities became more tired.

"St. Maarten, by being smarter, ensured that even when the economy got worse, St Maarten would fare better than other islands in the Caribbean. Things have been tough the last few years, but we would not have survived on many other islands."

Besides the cool movie exhibit, there are many beautiful paintings in the museum by Nick, who started with portraits and expanded to seascapes and landscapes. Nick's artwork has been exhibited in museums and galleries in 18 different countries. It toured the world with UNESCO and is included in thousands of private collections.

See Darth Vader, The Terminator, Michael Jackson, the Alien, Angelina Jolie, Johnny Depp & more. The Maley's aim is to inspire kids to do exceptional things and establish St. Maarten as the only destination worldwide where passengers can learn the inside stories of the making of famous movies like Star Wars.

Residents of St. Maarten/St. Martin are invited to tour the Exhibit FREE of charge 10:00am-4:30pm from December 13-31 (excluding Sundays) and to see for themselves St. Maarten's unique movie museum. Children must be accompanied by an adult. The Museum has a facebook places page under "Yoda Guy Movie Exhibit."

That Yoda Guy Movie Museum is located on 19a Front Street, Philipsburg. Call 542-4009; e-mail This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it
