BLACK HISTORY MONTH

‘I HAVE A DREAM’

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. had a dream for the people of the United States of America and for the people in the world. He was not only a dreamer, but he was also a man of action. He even got a Nobel Prize for Peace for the impact he has made in the world. What was the dream of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.? What actions did he take to see his dream come true?

 MARTIN LUTHER KING EXHIBITION

The Philipsburg Jubilee Library started on January 15 on the occasion of the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. an exhibition to observe International Martin Luther King Day. We hereby invite all the children, youth and adults of St Maarten to visit the library and the exhibition of documentation about the life, dreams and actions of this remarkable gentleman.

 BLACK HISTORY MONTH ACTIVITIES

In collaboration with human rights activists’ non-governmental organizations in St. Maarten, the library will host various activities and events during Black History Month this year. At the request of the United Nations Human Rights High Commissioner, the central theme this year will be non-discrimination and a discrimination free society.

Every day during the library’s opening hours, you can come to see the exhibition of information available in the library on the life, struggles and achievements of African descendants in the Americas, the Caribbean and St. Maarten. We will have movie time every Wednesday afternoon from 5:00 to 7:00. Culturally artistic presentations such as poetry, songs, music, dance and an interesting lecture will be presented every Thursday evening from 6:00 to 8:00pm.

READERS THEATRE FOR ELEMENTARY SCHOOL CHILDREN

Philipsburg Jubilee Library in collaboration with the St. Dominic High School students’ community service project presents “Readers Theatre.” With Readers Theatre there are no lines to memorize, no set, no costumes. It’s an exciting and entertaining way that encourages reading. We are asking various schools to send their best readers from grade 5 (FBE2 year 3) for a fun-filled event. Theme: Black History. Date: February 28. Time: 3:30 to 6:00pm (more information will be provided to the schools.)

BRING US YOUR DREAM

What is your dream for St Maarten?

Inspired by the dream and the actions of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and so many people in the United States and all over the world, we are asking you to present us your dream for St. Maarten on one page in the form of a poem, a composition, a drawing, a painting or any piece of art. Ask your parents and school teachers to help you present us your dream for St Maarten. Bring us your creation with your dream for St. Maarten at the library during opening hours. Final date to bring your dream is Saturday, February 20.

All the creations received will be exhibited and kept in the library. A DVD with all the dreams received will be presented to the Executive Council of the Island Territory of St Maarten.
