Sherman de Vries

3St. Maarten check-me-out!

Full name: Sherman de Vries

St. Maarten nickname: Ice

Age: 20

City and country of residence today: Leeuwarden, Netherlands.

Occupation: Student, artist, producer, sound designer.

Recap your story:

I was born in July 1990 and first attended Hillside Christian School. I then went to Milton Peters College and did VSBO. While at school I was lucky to be able to join Bulldog in the Laser 101 radio studio and do “Jingles” with him. This was my first introduction to a studio. When I was 15 I started rapping and performed live at The Alley and in 2008 I performed on the Boardwalk for Heineken. This is when I knew a music career was the road I wanted to follow after I left school.

Ramon Wilson, manager and singer at Cheri’s Café, kindly allowed me to use his recording studio “Country Sound” in Sucker Garden. Ramon also brought in some artists that I did some productions for like Big Blacks and King Melody.

My dream was to attend Friesland College of Sound Design in Holland. So I applied to Education Department to get a scholarship but was turned down. I really wanted this opportunity to further my studies so I applied directly to Friesland College and they told me I had to sit an entrance exam in Holland. The possibility of flying all the way there and getting turned down worried me, as it would be a waste of airfare so I asked them if we could do the exam on the internet and they agreed, although they had not done this before.

Friesland College was very happy with my performance and accepted me outright, so the next step was for me to apply for a student loan in Holland, which was also accepted. So in 2009 I was able to attend the college of my dreams at last.

What St. Maarten district are you from?

Ebenezer Estate.

Where did you go to school on St. Maarten?

Primary: Hillside Christian School

Secondary: Milton Peters College.

What is your favourite St. Maarten memory?

Beaches, the locals palm trees, that Caribbean feeling that comes when having local food.

What was your biggest surprise when you left the island? Did I really reach this far?

What are your accomplishments? Now I’m over to the other level of MBO 4, 2nd year. I have released two mixtapes; the first mixtape got sold more than 800 copies in two months before I left the island in 2009; my new mixtape called 10-10-10 launched on September 8 can be listened to on www.myspace.com/dalyricalsquad or www.morebacchanal.com

My target for this song is everyone, young and old, locals as well as tourists. I want people to feel a sense of pride and patriotism for their country after hearing this track. I want people that are not from here, when they listen to this track to get a sense of the history of the island from its discovery back in 1493 to its ups and downs and finally its future status when 10-10-10 comes. Most importantly, I just want people to enjoy the music.

The song has a nice laid back reggae vibe and is filled with factual content about St. Maarten’s history. Nice vibes and great content. I believe this song will do well throughout the Caribbean and also worldwide!

What are your goals?

I have two more years at Friesland College MBO 4 and then I plan to attend NHL (Noordelijke Hogeschool Leeuwarden) Pop Academy in Leeuwarden to achieve my HBO degree. My plan for the future is to have my own record label and further myself as a sound designer (producer, artist, music teacher, games sound designing).

What makes you special?

What makes me special? Hmm…Well, first of all, I am one of the artists who actually produces his own music from scratch. So at times I do have to record myself when there is no one around. But always the final project would be a great hit to me! I will always make sure it’s masterly done! No matter what it takes, I go after what I want to see accomplished in my projects. Tracks mixed/mastered by me can be found on the following websites… www.shermanakaice.hyves.nl www.youtube.com/youngj00000    www.facebook.com  (Search for >>Sherman de Vries) or Ice from St. Maarten

How long have you been gone?

One and a half years.

Do you have any advice for the young people of St. Maarten?

Don’t let anything get you down. Follow your dreams in any way you can. Go behind all problems, persevere diligently and you’ll be surprised at the way it will all turn out better than you expected.

Are you planning to return to St. Maarten in the future?

Not at the moment. For daily updates on what I’m doing now, you can now follow me on www.twitter.com/shermanakaice
