Born Devonish Ramlal, the 25-year-old Netherlands-based DJIAMS1 will be spicing things up at the Orgasmic Full Moon Party at Dreams Beach Club in Nettle Bay Beach tomorrow, July 31.

How would you describe yourself?

I'm a humble guy who works hard and I do things in a passionate way. I think humbleness is an important trait to have. It shows that you don't forget where you came from, and where you started and that you can still be the same person.

How did you end up with the deejay name IAMS1?

Before I became a professional deejay, my deejay name was Supremix. I eventually asked the older deejay generation for some advice. They said it was important that my deejay name was short, powerful and timeless. So that's why I changed my deejay name into IAMS1.

Education?

I am studying Social Sciences at University of Applied Sciences in Utrecht, Netherlands. I used to do social studies in combination with sports. Before I became a deejay, I played top sport in martial arts and that's why I started an education that included sports. I guess helping people is something that's in my nature.

How did you end up in the deejaying/entertainment field?

I was working in a club as a bartender and around that time I bought myself a DJ set. I played around and really got to know the deejaying field. The owner of that club was also a deejay and from St. Maarten – The Spiceman (Rondel Heyliger). I asked him if I could practice before opening of the club and he gave me a lot of opportunities to practice. Soon afterwards, I was the opening of the night. Besides Rondel Heyliger, I also want to mention DJ Jbeatz (Jimmy Matkussa). They both gave me opportunities and a good foundation of deejay skills and techniques.

There are many deejays around; what sets you apart from the rest?

My mixing style in combination with emceeing and playing music that I produce myself sets me apart from the rest. Meanwhile, I'm taking singing lessons in order to distinguish myself even more.

What is it about deejaying that you like?

I like meeting new people, especially colleagues from all over the world. I also like getting in contact with great artists. Experimenting with different music genres to broaden your music knowledge is also a great thing of deejaying.

How do you think you contribute to a better society as a deejay?

I've learned that you can really help people with their problems through music – both physical and psychological.

What are some of the challenges you encounter?

In my career as a deejay, you meet people who have the best interest at heart, but you also meet people who are acting like they have the best interest at heart. My biggest challenge was to let those people go, even when I had a personal relationship with them.

As a deejay, you're around music all the time; who is your all-time favourite artiste?

My all-time favourite artist is the King of Pop, Michael Jackson.

What do you like best about the job?

The best thing I like about this job is the pleasure that I get from deejaying. Playing music has a positive effect on me as a person.

Where can fans in the Netherlands find you playing?

The best way to stay up to date with my schedule is to like my page: www.facebook.com/iamdjs1 – on this page, you can find the exact data and places.

Please elaborate on the Orgasmic Full Moon event that you will be performing at in St. Maarten?

The Orgasmic Full Moon Party will be held at the Dreams Beach Club in Nettle Bay Beach St. Maarten on July 31 and August 29. My set starts at midnight. People can expect a crazy, energetic music explosion!

If you could meet any deejay in the world, who would you want to meet and why? Diplo! He is one of the most talented guys in the music industry that touched me with his music. His creativity in music is outstanding. And for DJ skills, I would like to meat DJ Craze. This man is just amazing; his skills are at some type of level nobody can reach.

What message do you have for youngsters who want to follow in your footsteps?

Work hard, stay humble and don't let anyone interfere with your methods to reach your goals.

What else are you involved in outside of deejaying?

At this moment, it is almost a year ago that my MC HGH (Hamza Mutabazi) and I started a party concept called The Zone. We are trying to get our event to hit the top of the party scene. After the summer, we will bring The Zone to five big cities.

Do you have any (other) special talents?

From when I was 12 to 18 years old, I was a professional martial arts practitioner. I participated in national and international competitions and won quite some medals.

Wine or beer?

Neither, until July 30. I started a competition with myself that I wouldn't drink alcohol for a year. So when that is all over, I will be on this island enjoying a beer.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

That's hard to say. I like to work with short time goals to experience short success. That motivates me to work harder and harder. The ultimate goal is to play on my own festival that has different stages with different styles of music. IAMS1 is there for everyone.

Dream holiday venue?

Seychelles in Africa.

Hobby?

Watching good movies.

Favourite quote?

Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.

What's your favourite type of music – what artistes do you listen to?

At this moment, I listen to EDM and the hottest artist I listen to is Jack U (Diplo and Skrillex).

If you could ask any three persons (dead or alive) to a dinner party, who would they be and what would you cook for them?

I would ask Karrueche, Cassie and Eva Longoria and make them homemade spicy pasta.
