Hotseat - Mr. Sponge

857_-_Hotseat_DJSpongeWhen it comes to electrifying parties, MC Michael Angelo, popularly known by his stage name MC Sponge and MC So Hype, has few equals. The 28-year-old Virgo-born, Belvedere resident is single, has no kids and loves life. He gives us insight into his world in this week's Hot Seat.

Who is MC Sponge?

MC Sponge is the "hypest" Master of Ceremonies, full of energy, giving the people what they want kinda guy. I am also known for the videos I do on YouTube with characters such as Bobby Mohawk, Officer Chakaron, Morreeen and Officer Karl. I also do short McMovies (as I like to call them) with different accents from the around the Caribbean region.

How would you describe yourself?

I'm a very quiet guy when I'm by myself, and very funny to others. I'm also an entrepreneur and there is never a dull moment around me. I am very, very spontaneous and never have time to eat, so when this happens, I can get cranky sometimes.

How did you end up with the DJ name MC Sponge?

When I was a student at MPC, a guy who we all know as Flex said I drink a lot of beer and I soak up all the beer like a sponge. A couple of days after this comment was made; SpongeBob came out so they added the name Bob to Sponge as I got older. As SpongeBob got less famous, I dropped the Bob and the beer and kept the name Sponge.

Where were you born and how did you end up here?

I was born in Brooklyn, New York. I ended up here when I was a couple of months old. My mom is originally from St. Maarten and I guess we just moved back down from the cold.

Where were you educated, and what did you study?

I went to schools in St. Maarten, the Netherlands, Maryland and Curaçao. I studied to be a police officer for the Coast Guard in Curaçao. I couldn't really swim to save myself before I did this course so it was a great challenge to be there and to complete everything. Although I no longer work with them, my love for the Coast Guard is always there.

How did you end up DJ-ing?

Back in the day, I started to MC for DJ Donny. I had mad skills with clarity on the mic and timing with the beat. On the acting side, when 187 Boys launched our CD, I did a couple of skits, but just the audio. Maja Hype kind of inspired me to start doing video skits.

St. Maarten has many MCs, what sets you apart from the rest?

To start, my mohawk (laughs); also, my wild and crazy figure; and my energy, which is ridiculously crazy.

What do you like about being an MC?

I like feeding off the crowd, the energy, and crowd control. It's crazy when I speak and all you hear is the base drop! People go crazy! #energy #dancing mission accomplished, people enjoyed life tonight!

How do you think you contribute to a better society as a DJ?

I try to stay away from anything that is negative. So when you see me, all you should see is clean fun.

What are some of the challenges you encounter in this field?

Having more than one venue or event to perform at in one day can be a challenge. My voice tends to leave. So now I stick to one event per day. Also when you're trying to bring in the next song and you look at the DJs laptop, all you see is hot very hot (technical joke). I have no idea what hot very hot is until the song is already playing (label the songs please).

You're around music all the time, who is your all-time favourite artiste?

My favourite all-time artiste is American hip hop duo Rae Sremmurd. My main reason for liking them is because they have so much energy.

What do you like best about the job?

I get to help people relax, stop thinking about any issues and enjoy life.

Where can fans find you playing and at what times?

Depends on where I'm booked so it can be at any venue. For all my videos, just check for mcsohype on Facebook, YouTube, Instagram or shots – you name it and I'm there.

How do you think the MC climate can be improved in St. Maarten for local MCs like yourself?

It can be improved with proper grammar for international sets and clarity overall as well as perfect timing with bass lines and drops.

If you could meet any MC and DJ in the world, who would you want to meet and why?

For DJs, it would have to be Avicii. I already met David Guetta. And for MC, it would probably have to be anyone that hosted BET Awards.

What message do you have for youngsters who want to follow in your footsteps?

I would advise them to stay humble. This takes you so far beyond recognition.

What else are you involved in outside of DJ-ing?

I am also a club promoter, an event planner and an actor doing my McMovies.

Do you have any (other) special talents?

I can make anyone laugh – I don't know how special that is. And everyone likes me – that's kind of a challenge.

Wine or beer?

Wine!

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

Alive and rich.

What is your dream holiday venue?

I visited my dream holiday venue three months ago when I went to Dubai.

Hobbies?

Cooking.

Pet peeve?

None.

Favourite quote?

Don't take life to seriously. It's not like you're gonna get out alive.

What's your favourite type of music; what artistes do you listen to?

House, deep house, trance and techno. David Guetta Avicii. I don't really like too much rap or RnB.

If you could ask any three persons (dead or alive) to a dinner party, who would they be and what would you cook for them?

I would invite Donald Trump, Bill Gates and Steve Jobs and I would cook macaroni and cheese and hot dogs.857_-_Hotseat_DJSponge
